After crawling around under the Ranger, the oil leak seemed to be coming from the filter. It had oil dripping off of it, and nothing else above or around it had a drop on it. Threw on a new filter, topped off the oil, and drove around for a bit. So far, not a single new drop of oil on the filter or driveway. All fixed (I hope) for $23.

Was it the filter canister itself? Or the gasket...?

Or was the whole thing just loose?

Fram sucks. Mobile 1, Wix, and NAPA Gold are what I’ve had good luck with. But I’m sure there are others that are just as good.

The gasket looked ok. It unscrewed with no effort at all, like turning on the kitchen sink.

Just lovely ...

Easy fix FTW, though!

It’s worth using OE parts sometimes. We only put Toyota filters on our vehicles at this point.

I have no actual reason to suspect you’re being dishonest. In fact, you seem quite sincere. However, if you’re telling me you fixed a Range Rover with an oil leak for $23... I’d have an easier time believeing that you won the lottery with a ticket you found blowing down the street.

Oh. Wait. You said “Ranger.” Oh! Well shit then, happy days!

Friends don't let friends buy fram.

Really. Maybe the gasket failed, but the filter wasn’t on very tight at all. The leak developed over the last week and was pretty significant. She wasn’t burning any oil, it was all dumping out. From the filter, straight down and all the way back was coated in oil. When I replaced the starter about a month ago, it was as clean as could be expected.

Now, she does have another, very small leak from a somewhere else on the other side. But it’s really small and only leaves tiny little drop on the driveway after she’s been on a full tank, all day trip. I was afraid that this leak had really opened up, but no. The bottom of the filter had oil dripping off of it. But only the bottom edge, the sides and top were clean as a whistle.

I’ve driven it twice since the fix and each time she looks clean and just as I left it after swapping the filter and cleaning it up a bit. No more puddle in the driveway. The truck probably dumped two quarts on Friday alone. It’s not doing that anymore.

$23 for a filter and oil. Fixed.
